Pine Ridge, South Dakota
Holy Rosary Mission Parish is located on and serves the Lakota people of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in Pine Ridge, S.D. Laypeople, Jesuits and sisters are present for their community each day and continue to make the commitment to the Holy Rosary Mission ministry and to the people of the reservation.
Pastoral ministry began at Holy Rosary in 1890 with the westward expansion that delivered Christianity to the Lakota. Sacred Heart Church was the first Catholic church organized on the reservation in 1890. Services were conducted in a converted store building until a church was completed in 1927. This served the growing community until the present-day, larger Sacred Heart Church complex was dedicated in 1972. Sacred Heart Church serves the largest congregation on the Pine Ridge Reservation.
With six active churches, three active missions and one school chapel, Holy Rosary Mission’s pastoral ministry programming serves more than 800 families on the reservation. Outreach initiatives in religious education, youth ministry, recovery ministry and leadership development ensure that these families, and so many more, have a safe and supportive environment to gather and share.
The Jesuits also run three schools on the reservation: Our Lady of Lourdes Elementary School, Red Cloud Elementary School and Red Cloud High School. Red Cloud High School boasts 57 Bill and Melinda Gates Millennium Scholarship recipients, the highest per capita in the country.
