Saint Louis University Named Among Nation’s Top Five Community Service Schools
October 1, 2013 — Saint Louis University has been named among
the top five schools in the country for community service by Washington Monthly for the third
The publication, based in Washington D.C., ranks schools based on
their contribution to the public good in three categories: social mobility,
research and service. Other notable honors Saint Louis University received from
Washington Monthly were "Top Jesuit School," "Top Faith-Based
School" and second-place ranking as a top private institution. Additionally,
the university was named to the President's Higher
Education Community Service Honor Roll for the
sixth consecutive year, the highest federal recognition a school can achieve
for commitment to service-learning and community engagement.
Highlights of Saint Louis University’s community service include
its Make a Difference Day, one of the largest collegiate days of service in the
nation, and its Community Service Federal
Work Study Program, which allows work-study students to work with
The university also raised $130,000 to help
fight cancer during its 2012 Relay for Life, which had more than 1,300
participants. The SLU Relay for Life has raised more than $1.25 million since
2004 for the American Cancer Society of Eastern Missouri and was awarded the
"Thanks A Million" Award by the group. The university also is
participating in the President's Interfaith and Community Service Campus
Challenge, a White House initiative inviting institutions of higher education
to commit to interfaith cooperation and community service programming on
November 15, 2018 — Kenyan Jesuit Father Victor-Luke Odhiambo, 62, was murdered on Nov. 15 when unknown assailants attacked the Daniel Comboni Jesuit Residence in Cueibet, South Sudan, where he resided.
