Abraham Lincoln Memorabilia Donated to John Carroll University

November 25, 2013 — On Nov. 19, 2013, the 150th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address, John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio, announced a gift of Abraham Lincoln memorabilia featuring letters, original photos and more from Robert (class of 1970) and Heidi Heltzel.

The collection includes documents signed by Abraham Lincoln, photographs of the president and rare books related to Lincoln and the Civil War. Housed in the Grasselli Library on campus, the Abraham Lincoln collection is also digitally preserved online.

Among the 60 historically significant items donated to the university is an original photograph of Lincoln, often called the “Gettysburg Portrait,” because it was taken on Nov. 8, 1863, 11 days before he delivered the address. Another item in the collection is Lincoln’s signature on an executive order dated Sept. 5, 1863, assigning a draft quota to the Eleventh District of Ohio.

Heltzel began donating items from his extensive Civil War collection to the university several years ago, said Charles Zarobila, curator of special collections at the library. Along with the Lincoln collection, Heltzel and his wife also donated $1 million to establish the Heltzel Endowed Professorship in Economics.

John Carroll University President Jesuit Father Robert L. Niehoff expressed gratitude for Mr. and Mrs. Heltzel’s donation, saying “Bob and Heidi are dedicated to what we are doing at John Carroll: preparing our students for the real world, grounded in the values of Jesuit education that teaches responsibility along with leadership.” [Sources: John Carroll University, Cleveland.com]
