Society of Jesus Ordains 31 New Jesuit Deacons

October 22, 2014 — Thirty-one Jesuits were ordained to the diaconate in October at Masses in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, and Oakland, California. For a Jesuit in formation, ordination to the diaconate is the final step in preparation for priestly ordination in the Society of Jesus.

The new Jesuit deacons include 24 American Jesuits, as well as men from Korea, Germany, Madagascar and East and Northwest Africa, who are studying theology in the U.S.

Most Reverend Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., Archbishop of Indianapolis, ordained 18 Jesuits, one Capuchin and three Redemptorists at the Church of Saint Ignatius of Loyola on Boston College’s campus on Oct. 11. Most of the men are students at the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry, where they are completing their theological and ministerial training.

“Please join us in thanking God for the gift that these good men are to the Society of Jesus and to the Church, and in asking God to bless and guide their ministry of service to God’s dear people,” said a letter from Maryland provincial Jesuit Father Robert M. Hussey, New England provincial Jesuit Father Myles N. Sheehan, and New York provincial Jesuit Father John J. Cecero.

Thirteen Jesuits were also ordained as deacons at the Oakland Cathedral of Christ the Light on Oct. 18 by Jesuit Bishop Michael C. Barber, Bishop of Oakland. Those Jesuits are students of the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University.

For the next eight months, these men will gain pastoral experience, as they are now authorized to proclaim the Word of God, to preach and to preside at the sacraments of baptism and marriage and at the rite of Christian burial.
