April 10, 2015 — The USA Northeast Province Jesuits presented the Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam Award to Cardinal Seán P. O’Malley, OFM Cap., at the annual Jesuit GALA held on April 7 at the Marriott Copley Place Hotel in Boston.
The Latin phrase, Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam, meaning “For the greater glory of God” is attributed to St. Ignatius, the founder of the Society of Jesus, and is a guiding principle of the Jesuits. The annual award honors those who have made a difference in the world by generously helping others. The evening was hosted by Jesuit Father James Martin, author and editor-at-large at America magazine.
In honoring Cardinal O’Malley, those gathered gratefully acknowledged his leadership not only in his important work as the current Archbishop of Boston, but also for his role in advising our brother Jesuit, Pope Francis.
Jesuit Father John Cecero, provincial of the USA Northeast Province, said in his remarks, “We take great pleasure in honoring our 2015 recipient of the AMDG Award, Cardinal Seán O’Malley. He has been a devoted friend of the Society, a strong supporter of our mission, an exemplary pastoral leader and a valued consultant to the Holy Father. We are delighted to acknowledge with esteem and affection his leadership in the Church of Boston and in the universal Church.”
Fr. Cecero also expressed his gratitude to GALA co-chairs Chuck and Gloria Clough, Bill and Jackie Egan and Jim and Lisa Mooney, thanking them and all of the committee members who worked so hard to ensure the success of the event.
