October 30, 2015 — This month, 20 Jesuits were ordained as deacons at Masses in Massachusetts and California. For a Jesuit in formation, ordination to the diaconate is the last step before priestly ordination in the Society of Jesus.
Twelve American Jesuits were ordained along with eight others who are also studying theology in the U.S. at the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry and the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University. The men ordained are listed below:

Most Reverend Peter Uglietto, Auxiliary Bishop of Boston, ordained 10 Jesuits on the campus of Boston College at the Church of Saint Ignatius of Loyola on Oct. 3. On Oct. 4, Roy Joseph, SJ, was ordained a deacon in the Syro-Malabar rite at St. Thomas Syro-Malabar Catholic Church in Framingham, Massachusetts, by His Excellency Mar Jacob Angadiath.

Roy Joseph, SJ, was ordained a deacon in the Syro-Malabar rite by His Excellency Mar Jacob Angadiath.
Nine Jesuits were also ordained as deacons at the Oakland Cathedral of Christ the Light on Oct. 24 by the Most Reverend Michael C. Barber, SJ, Bishop of Oakland.

For the next eight months, these men will gain pastoral experience, as they proclaim the Word of God, preach and preside at the sacraments of baptism and marriage and at the rite of Christian burial.
In addition to those ordained this month, four Jesuits were ordained to the diaconate on May 23 in Canada at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Toronto: Matthew Charlesworth (English Canada Province), Jean-Robert Déry (French Canada Province), Paul Robson (English Canada Province) and Emmanuel Saint-Hilaire (French Canada Province). The Most Reverend Terrence Prendergast, Archbishop of Ottawa, presided at the ordination liturgy for his fellow Jesuits.
Brillaire Délices, SJ (French Canada Province), studying at Université Laval in Quebec City, was ordained on May 2 by Bishop Gaëtan Proulx, Auxiliary Bishop of Quebec, in the church of Les Saints Martyrs Canadiens in Quebec.
