Boston College Plans Housing for Students Considering a Jesuit Vocation

February 24, 2016 — Boston College plans to open a unique residence on campus next fall: a house for students who are exploring the option of becoming a Jesuit.

Open to both undergraduate and graduate students, Loyola House is expected to open in the fall of 2016. Jesuit Father Casey Beaumier, director of the Institute for Advanced Jesuit Studies, will direct the program, and Francisco Sassetti da Mota, a Portuguese Jesuit currently studying at the School of Theology and Ministry, will assist. According to Fr. Beaumier, other Jesuits from Boston College will also be involved in the program.

The program was proposed as a way for young men studying at BC to discern whether the Jesuit lifestyle is one that they are seriously interested in. The programming in the house will give residents a spiritual experience that is, in certain ways, similar to a Jesuit's.

Students living at Loyola House will be encouraged to focus on the idea of living in a community and participating in various activities together, such as service projects and weekly dinners.

House members will also have spiritual directors to help them contemplate their choices, as well as access to a chapel, kitchen and dining hall.

“I think having an option like Loyola House contributes in a very positive way to the future,” said Fr. Beaumier. “We want there to be Jesuits for the future, especially at places like BC, so it makes a great deal of sense that we do what we can today to help promote the future work of the Jesuits.” [Source: The Heights]
