Two Jesuit High Schools Announce Leadership Changes

January 4, 2017 — St. Louis University High School and Rockhurst High School in Kansas City, Missouri, today announced transitions in leadership to take place within the next two years. The two Jesuit schools made simultaneous announcements to their respective communities that current St. Louis U. High President David Laughlin will become the first lay president of Rockhurst High School effective July 2018.

Very Rev. Ronald Mercier, SJ, provincial of the Jesuits USA Central and Southern Province, thanked Laughlin for his skill in promoting Jesuit education in the province: “The Jesuits' recent General Congregation celebrated the gift that our lay colleagues are to us in the Society of Jesus; today I have the chance to emphasize that gift as I reflect on the work of Mr. David Laughlin at St. Louis University High School. He has helped the school grow in every way and has set it on a path toward an exciting future; moreover, he showed how a lay president can not only preserve but foster the Jesuit character of the school. I am very grateful that I will still be able to rely upon him as a trusted colleague, though now in Kansas City rather than St. Louis.”

Laughlin was the first lay president at St. Louis University High School when he assumed that role in 2005. When he concludes his service to the school in 2018, he will be the longest-serving president in the school’s 200-year history. He previously served Rockhurst High School as principal from 2000 to 2005.

St. Louis University High School also announced the selection of Fr. Ian Gibbons, SJ, a Jesuit of the U.S. Central and Southern Province, as the school’s next principal, beginning in July 2017. Fr. Gibbons has served since 2014 as assistant principal at Regis High School in New York City.

Father Terrence Baum, SJ, a Jesuit of the Chicago-Detroit Province, announced in 2016 that the 2016-17 school year would be his last. He is concluding his 13th year as president of Rockhurst High School. The Rockhurst High School board of trustees will appoint an interim president for the 2017-18 school year. The board of trustees of St. Louis U. High has formed a search committee and is working closely with the province to begin the process of identifying the next president of St. Louis U. High.

“David Laughlin takes up leadership of a school that finds itself in such a strong position, thanks in large part to the ministry of Fr. Terry Baum,” said Fr. Mercier. “He has been a great blessing to the school and to the Province, and I want to thank him. May God bless him in his new ministry!”
