Jesuits Announce New Class of Alum Service Corps Volunteers

May 19, 2017 — The Jesuit-sponsored Alum Service Corps (ASC) announced that 15 young men and women will commit a year of service to six Jesuit schools of the U.S. Central and Southern (UCS) Province of the Society of Jesus. ASC volunteers give a year of post-college service in gratitude for their Jesuit education. Volunteers are mentors and teachers in six UCS Jesuit schools in Denver, Kansas City and St. Louis. They adopt a simple lifestyle while living in community and striving to grow spiritually.

“This year’s class of ASC teachers and mentors continues a long tradition of modeling service and living Ignatian spirituality out of gratitude,” said Dr. Pete Musso, director of school support for the province. “We select candidates who embody the highest ideals of Jesuit education. The members of ASC 27, like their 300+ predecessors, are terrific examples of young adults who are intellectually competent, open to growth, religious, loving and committed to justice.”

The 15 volunteers graduated from 13 different universities, five of them sponsored by the Jesuits, including Georgetown University, Loyola University Chicago, Regis University, Rockhurst University and Saint Louis University. This cohort also includes graduates from Miami University of Ohio, Princeton University, Vanderbilt University, the University of Dayton, the University of Indianapolis, the University of Missouri, the University of Notre Dame and the University of Tulsa.

Over 75 percent of them attended one of four Jesuit high schools, including De Smet Jesuit High School in St. Louis; Regis Jesuit High School in Denver; Rockhurst High School in Kansas City, Missouri; and St. Louis University High School.

ASC Cohort 27 boasts an average GPA of 3.58, and they bring an impressive breadth of experience in leadership, activities and service.

The members of ASC 27 will meet each other in person for the first time at their Summer Orientation outside of St. Louis beginning in mid-July. Following orientation, they will move into residences provided specifically for them by their schools, and they will begin preparing on site for their responsibilities, which include teaching, mentoring, coaching, tutoring and working closely with students and colleagues.

As part of their Ignatian formation — training in the spirituality of St. Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits — ASC mentors and teachers gather as a group three times during the year from across three cities for retreats. Over the past quarter century, more than 300 ASC volunteers have served students, with gratitude, in UCS Province schools.
