Fordham Preparatory School Closes 175th Anniversary Year with Mass

June 30, 2017 — On June 24, Fordham Preparatory School in the Bronx, New York, closed the celebration of its 175th anniversary year with the Mass of the Solemnity of the Nativity of John the Baptist. This solemnity, which the church celebrates on June 24, is the exact day that Archbishop John Hughes founded Fordham University and Fordham Prep together in 1841 as St. John's College, a small Catholic school in the Bronx, New York, serving just six students.

Father Timothy P. Kesicki, SJ, celebrated the Mass at Forhdam Prep.

Today, Fordham Prep offers over 60 extracurricular activities to nearly 1,000 students, and Fordham University educates over 15,000 students each year in 10 schools.

Father Timothy P. Kesicki, SJ, president of Jesuit Conference of Canada and the United States, joined the Fordham Prep community to celebrate the Eucharist and preach. “Today we celebrate the gift of Fordham Preparatory School, the witness of its many alumni and the hope that you bring to this city and this world,” he said.

In his homily, Fr. Kesicki told those gathered, “Your mission is to prepare young men so that in all things they might choose God. And only God knows how many competing idols they must choose from. ... Saint Ignatius Loyola did not want us to take students out of this world, he wanted us to form them in this world so that they might discern between what leads nowhere and what leads to God. Your mission is to prepare them to discern well, so that their choices help them to achieve their fullest potential.”

Fr. Kesicki concluded his homily saying: “May this institution, which has formed excellent disciples for nearly two centuries, continue this great mission. And may we who share in its legacy commit ourselves to do the same.”

Other events throughout the anniversary year included a Fordham Prep group marching in New York City’s St. Patrick’s Day parade; a presentation on racial justice; alumni reunion events; and a lecture series focused on the intersection of Fordham University’s mission and challenges of the contemporary world.
