August 11, 2017 — Fifteen new members of the Alum Service Corps — volunteers who serve for one year as faculty members in Jesuit middle and high schools in Denver, Kansas City, and St. Louis — are ready to begin the school year.
With the prayers and support of more than 300 Alum Service Corps alumni, and under the leadership of ASC Director of Ignatian Formation Fr. Vincent Giacabazi, SJ, and Louie Hotop, SJ, the 27th class (referred to as the 27th Cohort) of Alum Service Corps completed summer orientation in St. Louis.
Founded in 1991, the program recruits recent college graduates who give a year of service in gratitude for their Jesuit education. Members of ASC adopt a simple living lifestyle in community and commit to spiritual growth in the Ignatian tradition.
Volunteers serve as faculty members in six Jesuit schools: Loyola Academy, St. Louis University High School and De Smet Jesuit High School in St. Louis; Rockhurst High School in Kansas City, Missouri; and Regis Jesuit High School and Arrupe Jesuit High School in Denver.
During orientation, ASC mentors and volunteers grew in community, practiced their faith and learned about teaching in Jesuit schools. Highlights of the orientation included visits to the three Jesuit schools in St. Louis, presentations from experts in the field of Jesuit education, student panels, support from ASC school coordinators, an ASC alum Mass and BBQ, and a Missioning Mass at Jesuit Hall (Saint Louis University) — all set in the context of the themes of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius.
After orientation, ASC volunteers traveled to their new homes and new schools in Denver, Kansas City or St. Louis, to begin their year of service. While they work in different schools and cities, ASC Cohort 27 will gather together again for three spiritual retreats throughout this academic year.
The 15 ASC mentors and teachers this year graduated from 13 different universities, five of them sponsored by the Jesuits, including Georgetown University, Loyola University Chicago, Regis University, Rockhurst University and Saint Louis University. This cohort also includes graduates from Miami University of Ohio, Princeton University, Vanderbilt University, the University of Dayton, the University of Indianapolis, the University of Missouri, the University of Notre Dame and the University of Tulsa.
Over 75 percent of them attended one of four Central and Southern Province Jesuit high schools, including De Smet Jesuit High School, Regis Jesuit High School, Rockhurst High School and St. Louis University High School.
ASC Cohort 27 boasts an average GPA of 3.58, and they bring an impressive breadth of experience in leadership, activities and service.
