October 2, 2018 — This summer, several Jesuits were ordained to the priesthood at Masses in Puerto Rico and Haiti.
Jesuit Father Fernando Luis Barreto Mercado was ordained on July 28 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, with the Most Reverend Roberto O. González Nieves, OFM, Archbishop of San Juan, presiding at the Mass at the Jesuits’ St. Ignatius Loyola Parish.

This marked the first Jesuit celebration of the rite of ordination in Puerto Rico since the island became part of the USA Central and Southern Province in December 2014. Fr. Barreto Mercado is from Ponce, Puerto Rico, and has been assigned to serve for the next year as parochial vicar at St. Ignatius Loyola Parish, where he was ordained and celebrated his first Mass on July 29.
On August 4, four Jesuits were ordained to the priesthood in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, by Cardinal Chibly Langlois. The four Jesuits — Fathers Germain Clerveau, Amos Estinor, Eddy Mondestin, and Jean Bertin St. Louis — are part of the Jesuits’ Province of Canada.
