Jesuits Celebrate Ordinations in Puerto Rico and Haiti
2, 2018 — This summer, several Jesuits were ordained to the priesthood at
Masses in Puerto Rico and Haiti.
Father Fernando Luis Barreto Mercado was ordained on July 28 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, with the Most
Reverend Roberto O. González Nieves, OFM, Archbishop of San Juan, presiding at
the Mass at the Jesuits’ St. Ignatius Loyola Parish.

This marked the first
Jesuit celebration of the rite of ordination in Puerto Rico since the island
became part of the USA Central and Southern Province in December 2014. Fr.
Barreto Mercado is from Ponce, Puerto Rico, and has been assigned to serve for
the next year as parochial vicar at St. Ignatius Loyola Parish, where he was
ordained and celebrated his first Mass on July 29.
November 15, 2018 — Kenyan Jesuit Father Victor-Luke Odhiambo, 62, was murdered on Nov. 15 when unknown assailants attacked the Daniel Comboni Jesuit Residence in Cueibet, South Sudan, where he resided.
