Jesuit Father Gregory O’Meara Named Rector of Creighton University’s Jesuit Community

Jesuit Father Gregory J. O’Meara has been appointed rector of the Jesuit community at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., by Jesuit Father General Adolfo Nicolás, superior general of the Society of Jesus. The appointment is effective July 31.

Fr. O’Meara succeeds Jesuit Father Roc F. O’Connor, who has served as rector since August 2007. As rector, Fr. O’Meara is responsible for fostering the spiritual, physical and ministerial health of about 50 Jesuits belonging to the community.

Fr. O’Meara was ordained in 2002 and has taught at Marquette University Law School in Milwaukee since that time. He was granted tenure and named associate professor of law in 2010. He has been awarded the James D. Ghiardi Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence on three different occasions. His research centers on the philosophical foundations of legal interpretation.

Fr. O’Meara’s legal experience also includes serving as an assistant district attorney in Milwaukee County and teaching at the University of Wisconsin Law School. While serving as rector, he will also teach in the Creighton University School of Law.

Fr. O’Meara received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame, his J.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a graduate law degree from New York University.  He also studied theology at the Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge, Mass. [Creighton University]
