Society of Jesus Ordains 18 New Deacons

October 30, 2013 — Eighteen Jesuits were ordained to the diaconate in October at Masses in Chestnut Hill, Mass., and Santa Clara, Calif.  For a Jesuit in formation, ordination to the diaconate is the final step in preparation for priestly ordination in the Society of Jesus.

Archbishop of Boston, Cardinal Seán Patrick O’Malley, O.F.M. Cap., ordained eight Jesuits and one Redemptorist at St. Ignatius of Loyola on Boston College’s campus on Oct. 12. All nine men are current students at the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry (STM), where they are completing their theological and ministerial training. The congregation of approximately 600 included family members of the ordained, members of the Boston College Jesuit and Redemptorist communities and students, faculty and staff of the STM.

Ten Jesuits were also ordained as deacons at Santa Clara University’s Mission Church on Oct. 19. The main celebrant was Auxiliary Bishop Robert McElroy of San Francisco.

The new deacons were ordained as part of their formation to become priests, and they are authorized to proclaim the Word of God, to preach and to preside at the sacraments of baptism and marriage and at the rite of Christian burial.
