Jesuit Father Scott Santarosa Named Next Provincial of Oregon Province

November 11, 2013 — Jesuit Father General Adolfo Nicolás has appointed Jesuit Father Scott Santarosa as the next provincial of the Oregon Province. Fr. Santarosa will take on this leadership role in the summer of 2014, succeeding Jesuit Father Patrick Lee.

Presently, Fr. Santarosa serves as the pastor of Dolores Mission Church in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, where much of his pastoral work is done in Spanish.

His previous assignments as a Jesuit have included teaching for three years at Bellarmine College Preparatory in San Jose, Calif., and for five years at Verbum Dei High School in Watts, Los Angeles, where he and other Jesuits worked to bring the failing high school back to its former reputation as a quality, inner-city Catholic college preparatory school.

Fr. Santarosa was born in South Lake Tahoe, Calif., and raised in Sacramento, Calif., where he attended Jesuit High School. He received a bachelor’s in civil engineering from Santa Clara University in California and then spent a year in the Jesuit Volunteer Corps, where he ran an after-school program for youth in Newark, N.J. He entered the California Province of the Society of Jesus in 1989 and was ordained to the priesthood in 2000.

“I am most grateful for Scott’s openness to taking on this role for us,” Fr. Lee said in a statement. “We will all welcome him to the Oregon Province and be supportive of him in this new mission.” [Sources: Oregon Province, Dolores Mission]
