Father General Appoints New Provincials for Maryland and New York Provinces

December 9, 2013 — Jesuit Father General Adolfo Nicolás has appointed Jesuit Father Robert M. Hussey as the next provincial of the Maryland Province and Jesuit Father John J. Cecero as the next provincial of the New York Province. Both provincials will begin their terms on July 31, 2014.

Fr. Hussey will succeed Jesuit Father James Shea in the Maryland Province, and Fr. Cecero will succeed Jesuit Father David Ciancimino in the New York Province. On July 31, 2015, when the New England and New York Provinces unite to become a single province, Fr. Cecero will become provincial of that new province.

Fr. Hussey entered the Society of Jesus in 1989 in the Maryland Province after completing a Ph.D. in economics from Duke University. Following an assignment teaching economics in Chile and after theological studies at Weston School of Theology, Fr. Hussey was ordained in 2000. Fr. Hussey taught economics at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and has served as pastor and superior at St. Raphael the Archangel Church in Raleigh, N.C., for the past five years.

Fr. Cecero, also a Jesuit of the Maryland Province, has spent a great deal of time in both the New England and New York Provinces. He completed his theological studies at the Weston School of Theology, then located in Cambridge, Mass., and has been a professor of psychology at Fordham University in New York since 1998. He is currently taking a sabbatical year after having served as rector of the Spellman Hall community since 2007.

“We are grateful to the superiors of the provinces, the consultors and all who participated in this process,” said Fr. Shea, Fr. Ciancimino and Jesuit Father Myles Sheehan, provincial of the New England Province in a joint statement. “Most of all, we are grateful to both Fr. Hussey and Fr. Cecero for accepting these important missions from Father General.”
