Jesuit Bishop Michael Barber to Celebrate Mass at Cardinal O'Connor Conference on Life

January 13, 2014 — Each January, the Georgetown University Cardinal O'Connor Conference on Life, the largest student-run pro-life conference in the nation, gathers activists and students across the United States to discuss the sacredness of all human life.

This year, the conference is scheduled for Jan. 20, 2014, and will conclude with a Mass for Life on Georgetown University’s campus celebrated by Jesuit Bishop Michael Barber, Bishop of Oakland.

Named in honor of Cardinal John O’Connor, late Archbishop of New York and a Georgetown University alumnus, the one-day conference precedes the annual March for Life in Washington, D.C. Cardinal O’Connor was renowned for his efforts as a champion of the unborn.

Attendees will hear from leading voices in the pro-life movement, participate in small group discussions and meet other student pro-life leaders. Now in its 15th year, the conference has hosted many prominent pro-life speakers, including Helen Alvaré, Margaret Colin, Dr. Michael Pakaluk and Deirde McQuade, among others.

The keynote speaker this year will be Robert P. George, McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence at Princeton University and the founder and director of the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions. Other speakers, including Jesuit Father Stephen Fields, professor of theology at Georgetown, will give lectures in smaller breakout sessions. A panel discussion titled "Publicly Pro-Life: Why Abortion is not a Private Issue" will also be presented.

The Cardinal O’Connor Conference is just one of the pro-life events scheduled in January near the anniversary of the landmark Roe v. Wade decision. On Jan. 22, the annual Jesuit Mass and Rally for Life sponsored by the U.S. Jesuit Conference will be held in Washington, D.C., for students of Jesuit institutions.
