Georgetown Prep Names Jesuit Father Scott Pilarz as New President

March 26, 2014 — The oldest Jesuit secondary school in the country has a new president. Jesuit Father Scott Pilarz has been named the next president of Georgetown Preparatory School in North Bethesda, Md., effective July 1, 2014. He succeeds acting president Jeffrey L. Jones.

Fr. Pilarz has previously served as president of both the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania and Marquette University in Milwaukee. He is a trustee of Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia and has served on the boards of a number of secondary schools, including Georgetown Prep, which was founded in 1789.

He was a professor of English at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and is currently a professor in the English department at Saint Joseph’s University. Fr. Pilarz is the author of “Robert Southwell, S.J., and the Mission of Literature 1561-1595: Writing Reconciliation,” as well as numerous articles on subjects ranging from John Donne to leadership in Ignatian education.

A graduate of Georgetown University, Fr. Pilarz holds a Ph.D. in English from the City University of New York, a master’s degree in philosophy from Fordham University in New York and a Master of Divinity degree from Weston Jesuit School of Theology (now Boston College School of Theology and Ministry).

“I look forward to working with Prep’s excellent faculty and staff to challenge, support and care for Prep’s students as they develop into accomplished scholars, athletes, artists, men of faith and generous citizens in their communities,” said Fr. Pilarz. “I am eager to work with the entire Prep community to ensure Prep’s continued success as an outstanding school, enhance its Ignatian spirituality and ensure a vibrant Prep for future generations."

Thomas Boyland '78, Chair of Georgetown Prep's Board of Trustees, stated, “Fr. Pilarz has the vision and skills to lead Georgetown Prep into exciting new opportunities in education and to further our mission, while honoring our rich Jesuit history and strong traditions and values.” [Source: Georgetown Prep]
