Jesuit Father Scott Lewis Named Academic Dean of Regis College in Toronto

June 5, 2014 — Jesuit Father Scott Lewis has been appointed as Dean of Regis College, the Jesuit School of Theology at the University of Toronto, where he has taught for the past decade. Fr. Lewis began his five-year term on May 1.

“I have gratitude for the confidence that my colleagues showed in me,” Fr. Lewis said. “There’s a little bit of apprehension, but it is excitement too. It is a challenge and something new, and I look forward to it.”

Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Fr. Lewis served in the U.S. Navy from 1966 to 1973 and the U.S. Navy Reserve from 1974 to 1976. He entered the California Province of the Society of Jesus in 1979 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1987.

Fr. Lewis holds a master’s degree in history from the Catholic University of America; a Master of Divinity degree from the Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge, Massachusetts; a Licentiate in Sacred Theology from Regis College; and a Licentiate in Sacred Scripture from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome. He received his doctorate in sacred theology from the Gregorian University in Rome.

While a member of the Regis faculty, Fr. Lewis also served as director of the Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Centre in Pickering, Ontario, Canada. For more than 10 years, his weekly Gospel reflection, “God’s Word on Sunday,” has been published in The Catholic Register.  [Sources: Regis College, The Catholic Register]
