America Magazine Wins Record Number of Catholic Press Association Awards

June 23, 2014 — Capping off a remarkable publishing year, America magazine garnered a record-breaking 27 awards for journalistic excellence from the Catholic Press Association (CPA), the most awards won by the Jesuit-sponsored magazine in a single year in its 105-year history.  Among its many accolades, America was honored for its groundbreaking interview with Pope Francis, conducted by Jesuit Father Antonio Spadaro and published in September 2013. 

The awards were announced on June 20, and America was also honored for its coverage of immigration, the U.S. Supreme Court and the Far East. The magazine’s “Books and Culture” section won first place in its category, as did “(Un)Conventional Wisdom,” America’s politics blog by Robert David Sullivan.

“We are delighted to receive this strong affirmation from our colleagues in the Catholic media,” said Editor-in-Chief Jesuit Father Matt Malone. “This historic night marks the start of the most dynamic expansion of our domestic and international coverage in 30 years,” he noted.  

America’s latest honors add to the more than 100 awards for excellence in Catholic journalism that the magazine has been awarded by the CPA in recent years.

The Jesuit Post, an online publication created two years ago by young Jesuits, was also recognized by the CPA. The website took home four awards, including first place for best online blog and first place for best online content not published in print for its analysis of Pope Francis’ interview in America.  “We are extremely grateful to our colleagues and friends at the CPA for their support and for recognizing our work,” wrote The Jesuit Post.
