The Church of St. Francis Xavier, located in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City, strives to be a welcoming community and a prophetic witness to the Spirit of Christ in the world. Founded in 1882, the church is sponsored by the New York Province of the Society of Jesus.
The parish is diverse, composed of faithful Catholics from a variety of racial and ethnic backgrounds, members of the LGBT community and a growing number of young families. Over 20 ministry groups are active at the present time. These ministries address a wide range of interests and needs that cut across the dimensions of spirituality, community, justice and service. St. Francis Xavier is known for its beautiful music programs, which attract worshipers from around the greater New York metropolitan area.
The church is also home to the Xavier Mission, an organization where the poor, alienated and marginalized find a home and are served through programs that combat hunger, offer shelter and provide education and training for those transitioning out of homelessness and unemployment. Though the church does not sponsor a school, it has developed an impressive catechetical program of faith and family formation that continues to grow in size and scope.
