Howes, South Dakota
The Sioux Spiritual Center, nestled amid the gently rolling hills of western South Dakota, is the heart of the Diocese of Rapid City’s efforts to develop native clergy and leadership on the reservations within the diocese.
The center, built by the diocese and staffed by Jesuits, offers a variety of spiritual and educational programs. In addition to regular retreats and spiritual programs for local Native people, two summer institutes are offered each year: one for mission personnel about to enter the field of Native Ministry or who have had a few years of initial experience and a second for Native American catechists currently serving their communities.
Other offerings at the center include guided prayer experiences; weekend parish retreats to provide a time for quiet reflection; recovery retreats to give hope to all those who are recovering from drug and/or alcohol addiction; and ministry retreats for those who choose to serve in formal ministries.
The Jesuits and the diocese strive to create a sacred environment at the Sioux Spiritual Center — a place between heaven and earth where God's spirit and the Lakota people become one.
