Fr. John W. Peck, SJ

Fr. John W. Peck, SJ, 34, grew up in New Kensington, Pennsylvania. When he was just 15 years old, Fr. Peck perceived God was calling him to the priesthood. Prayer and participation in the sacraments helped confirm his vocation, and after graduating from Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh in 1999, he began formation as a seminarian for the Diocese of Greensburg, Pennsylvania. His studies began at the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio, where he received a bachelor’s degree in philosophy in 2003. Next, Fr. Peck was sent to study at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. During his second year in Rome, he felt God was calling him to the Jesuits, and so during his third year of studies he went to live with Jesuit scholastics at the International College of the Gesu in Rome, which solidified his calling to the Society. After completing his bachelor’s degree in sacred theology in 2007, he returned to the United States and entered the Jesuit novitiate in Syracuse, New York. Following two years there, he went to Fordham University in the Bronx, New York, and obtained a master’s degree in philosophy in 2011. Fr. Peck then taught philosophy at Loyola University Maryland in Baltimore for two years. It was the highlight of his Jesuit formation; he had fun teaching students and benefitted enormously from the mentoring he received from his colleagues. After his teaching assignment, Fr. Peck earned a Licentiate in Sacred Theology at the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry while working as a deacon at the Catholic Community at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, assisting at Sunday Mass and helping with the RCIA program. His first assignment as a priest will be at Holy Trinity Parish in Washington, D.C. Fr. Peck will celebrate his first Mass as a Jesuit priest at Fordham’s University Church, the same church where he will be ordained. (Maryland Province)
