Fr. Loren Adam DeLeon, SJ

Fr. Loren Adam DeLeon, SJ, 33, was born in Hollywood, California, but raised by his mother in her hometown of Cleveland. After attending St. Robert Bellarmine Parish School, Fr. DeLeon first met the Jesuits at Saint Ignatius High School in Cleveland. He holds a bachelor’s degree in religious studies from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. Upon graduating in 2003, he volunteered as a teacher and coached rugby at St. George’s College in Kingston, Jamaica. The experience was transformative for Fr. DeLeon, so he returned to the U.S. and entered the Jesuits in 2004. As a Jesuit novice, he spent five months leading youth retreats at the Jesuit Spiritual Center in Milford, Ohio. After taking vows in 2006, Fr. DeLeon earned a master’s degree in social philosophy at Loyola University Chicago and then taught for three years at Christ the King Jesuit College Preparatory School, a Cristo Rey network school on Chicago’s west side. Missioned in 2012 to the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University in Berkeley, California, Fr. DeLeon earned a Master of Divinity degree while serving as a deacon at St. Patrick Parish in Oakland, California, and St. Ignatius College Preparatory in San Francisco, California. He also spent a semester studying theology at Hekima College in Nairobi, Kenya, and working at St. Aloysius Gonzaga, a high school for AIDS orphans in the Kibera slum of Nairobi in 2014. After six consecutive summers of study, he will earn a Master of Theology degree in July 2015 from the Institute for Black Catholic Studies at Xavier University of Louisiana. After ordination, he will serve at St. Columbanus Catholic Church on Chicago’s south side. Fr. DeLeon will celebrate his first Mass as a Jesuit priest at St. Benedict the African East in Chicago.
