Marcus C. Fryer, S.J.
Fr. Marcus C. Fryer, S.J., 35, hails from Missouri City, Texas, a suburb of Houston. He attended Strake Jesuit College Preparatory in Houston, where on a retreat his junior year he began to think about the priesthood. As a senior, he met a young Jesuit in formation assigned to Strake, and it opened his eyes to the possibility of a Jesuit vocation. At Texas A&M University in College Station, Fr. Fryer earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 2004. While at Texas A&M, he worked for the school’s emergency medical services and as a 911 dispatcher on campus. He took classes to become an emergency medical technician and during his junior year began working for the Cy-Fair Fire Department in Harris County, Texas. After college, while trying to decide between a career in public safety or education, Fr. Fryer went back to Strake Jesuit, teaching for a year and living on campus with Jesuits through the school’s Alumni Service Corps. He joined the Society in 2006, and as a novice, Fr. Fryer taught third grade at Good Shepherd Nativity Mission School in New Orleans, where he realized his passion for primary education. He also served as a chaplain at a state prison in Concord, Massachusetts, and as a campus minister for the junior college at St. John’s College in Belize City, Belize. Next, he studied philosophy at Saint Louis University before being assigned to Strake Jesuit in 2011. Fr. Fryer taught English and theology, coached swimming and water polo and was the educational technology coordinator. In 2014, he began studies at the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry, receiving a Master of Divinity degree and a master’s degree in theology and completing a summer program following St. Ignatius’ footsteps in Spain and Rome. Fr. Fryer also worked on campus with the Kairos and Christian Life Communities programs and served as a deacon at Our Lady of Grace in Chelsea, Massachusetts, and St. Mary of the Assumption in Revere, Massachusetts. After ordination, he will work in Albuquerque, New Mexico, as the parochial vicar at Immaculate Conception Church. Fr. Fryer will celebrate his first Mass at Immaculate Conception Jesuit Church in New Orleans and a Mass of Thanksgiving at Strake Jesuit. (Central and Southern Province)
