Fr. Edmund K-F Lo, SJ
Fr. Edmund K-F Lo, SJ, was born in Hong Kong and moved with his family to Vancouver, Canada, when he was 13. He attended the University of British Columbia, receiving a bachelor’s degree in cell biology and genetics in 2004 and a master’s degree in neuroscience in 2008. During college, Edmund was very involved with his Catholic faith through the Catholic student club and his local parish. He also got to know a Jesuit who was studying science at the university. The more Edmund learned about the Jesuits, the more he felt called to a vocation. After graduation, he worked as a neuroethics research intern for six months before joining the Society of Jesus in 2008. As a novice, Edmund spent several months in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, in 2010 and was teaching there when the massive earthquake struck. For the next two months, he helped with relief efforts, including working with doctors, firefighters, mobile emergency relief teams and refugees — work that called him to actively discern in every situation and to accompany those who were suffering. The last three months there, Edmund taught English to Haitians in a slum and got to know the people and culture on a personal level. Missioned next to Regis College at the University of Toronto, he earned a diploma in philosophical studies in 2012. He then taught science and ethics at Campion College in Regina, Saskatchewan, for two years. Back at Regis College, Edmund received a Master of Divinity degree and will complete a Licentiate in Sacred Theology this fall; he also facilitated faith and science discussion groups at the Newman Center. He served as a deacon at the Jesuits’ Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Toronto and is on the board of the Martyrs’ Shrine in Midland, Ontario, and of Camp Ekon, a Jesuit-run summer camp in Canada. During much of his formation, Edmund gave retreats to young adults. After ordination, he will serve as a vocation promoter in Canada. Edmund will celebrate his first Mass of Thanksgiving at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish. (English Canada Province)
