Fr. Eddy Mondestin, SJ, was born in Pétion-Ville, a suburb of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. With his five siblings, he grew up in a very active Catholic family, attending the neighborhood parish. In his early 20s, he accompanied his parish priest on a visit to a remote area of Haiti. The welcome and joy expressed by the residents at the priest’s arrival moved Eddy to tears and inspired him to become a priest. He entered the Grand Séminaire Notre Dame of Haiti and earned a diploma in philosophy. He was then spiritually accompanied by Fr. Gontrand Décoste, SJ, who later became the first Jesuit bishop in Haiti. After getting to know some Jesuit scholastics, Eddy was struck by their commitment to the poor and the simplicity of their lives. In 2004, he taught catechism at the local elementary school in Canapé-Vert, Haiti, for a year while continuing his research on the Jesuits. He entered the Society in 2005 and ministered to AIDS patients as a novice. Eddy was next missioned to the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Colombia, earning a Licentiate in Philosophy in 2010. He returned to Port-au-Prince and worked for Fe y Alegría, an international organization devoted to transforming communities through education. In 2012, Eddy was missioned to Université Laval in Quebec City, earning a bachelor’s degree in theology in 2015. While in Quebec, he completed two years of formation in spiritual accompaniment and one year of training in entrepreneurship, sang in the university’s choir and taught catechism to children. In 2016, he went to Montreal to attend the Institut de Formation Humaine, graduating in May 2018. After ordination, Eddy will work at the Jesuit novitiate in Dumay, near Port-au-Prince. He will celebrate his first Mass of Thanksgiving at the Church of St. Jacques de Fermathe in Port-au-Prince. (French Canada Province)
