Senator Kaine Meets with Honduran Jesuit Priest Father Melo Moreno to Discuss Important Role of Civil Society and Non-Governmental Organizations in Honduras

Washington, D.C., November 14, 2014 Yesterday, Senator Tim Kaine, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, met with Father Ismael “Melo” Moreno, a Honduran Jesuit and well-known human rights activist.

Kaine and Fr. Melo discussed the evolution of the Jesuit role in Honduras, where Kaine worked with Jesuit missionaries from 1980 to 1981. Fr. Melo, who directs two Jesuit ministries: Radio Progreso and E.R.I.C. (The Team for Reflection, Research and Communication), highlighted the important role of the media, civil society and other non-governmental organizations in countering deteriorating security and economic conditions in Honduras, like those driving migration.

During the visit, Kaine described his time in Honduras as the most important year of his life.

“I think of El Progreso every day,” Kaine said. “The people, aside from my family, are the most important in shaping who I am today.”
