Jesuit Father Dave Anderson Ministers to Seattle Seahawks

November 20, 2014 — Jesuit Father Dave Anderson, chaplain for Seattle University alumni and the university’s men's basketball team, recently added another chaplain responsibility to his list: the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks.

Fr. Anderson is now one of two priests who celebrate Mass for Catholic Seahawks players and coaches the night before their games. He takes on the role along with Father Joseph “Jay” DeFolco, pastor at a nearby parish.

It's a familiar role for Fr. Anderson. He filled in for the team’s previous Catholic chaplain and also celebrated Mass for Catholic players and coaches on visiting teams when they came to play the Seahawks.

Fr. Anderson says he’s glad to bring Mass to the Seahawks, whose players might otherwise miss Mass for four or five months at a time during the football season because of a demanding weekend game schedule. Fr. Anderson also sees athletics as one of the “frontiers of culture” to which his Ignatian spirituality calls him to serve.

"I love the Seahawks and I want to see them win, but my primary interest is how can I go to those places where the Eucharist is not being offered," Fr. Anderson says. [Source: Seattle University, Northwest Catholic]
