Jesuit Father Ryan J. Maher Named Next President of Scranton Preparatory School

December 15, 2014 — Scranton Preparatory School in Scranton, Pennsylvania, announced that Jesuit Father Ryan J. Maher will become the school’s new president in July 2015. Fr. Maher currently serves as Executive Director of the Jesuit Center at the University of Scranton.

Fr. Maher will succeed Jesuit Father Herbert B. Keller, who is stepping down from the presidency at Scranton Prep after 18 years.

Jesuit Father Robert M. Hussey, provincial of the Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus, said of the appointment: “I am very pleased to mission Fr. Ryan Maher, S.J., to be the next President of Scranton Prep and grateful to Fr. Maher for his availability and passion to take on this role in the name of the Society of Jesus. I am confident that Fr. Maher will be an excellent president to lead this great school and to foster its Jesuit and Catholic identity in collaboration with so many who share ownership in its mission.”

Born and raised in Phoenix, Fr. Maher received his undergraduate degree in linguistics from Georgetown University. He then worked on Capitol Hill for four years as a legislative assistant in the United States Senate. After entering the Jesuits in 1986, Fr. Maher went on to earn a master’s degree in philosophy from Saint Louis University and a Master of Divinity degree in theology from the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, California. In 2001, Fr. Maher was awarded an Ed.D. in private school administration from the University of San Francisco. He was ordained a Jesuit priest in 1997.

Fr. Maher was an English teacher at Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C., and at St. Joseph’s Preparatory School in Philadelphia, where he was also Director of Campus Ministry. Throughout his career in Jesuit education, Fr. Maher has directed numerous service programs for students and faculty, both in the United States and internationally. He has been a member of the Board of Trustees at Scranton Prep for the past three years.

Prior to coming to the University of Scranton in 2012, Fr. Maher worked for 11 years as an administrator and professor at Georgetown University. During that time, Fr. Maher served as Assistant Dean and then as Associate Dean and Director of Catholic Studies. For two of those years (2005-07), he was the Assistant Dean and a member of the founding faculty of the Georgetown School of Foreign Service in the nation of Qatar, becoming the first Jesuit ever to work in that Persian Gulf country.

“I am deeply honored to be entrusted with the presidency of Scranton Prep,” Fr. Maher said. “My whole life has been shaped by the sacrifices my parents made so my siblings and I could receive the gift of a Catholic and Jesuit education. I am passionate about helping committed parents of the Scranton area offer that same gift to their children.” [Source: Scranton Preparatory School]
