Dr. Christopher Puto
Spring Hill College Names First Lay President

March 3, 2015 — Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama, has named Dr. Christopher Puto as its 37th president, making him the first permanent lay president in the college’s 185-year history. Puto, a Spring Hill alumnus, will begin his tenure on June 1, succeeding Jesuit Father Gregory Lucey, who will focus on mission and identity as a senior administrator.

Puto graduated from Spring Hill College in 1964 with a degree in economics. He earned a Master of Business Administration degree in marketing from the University of Miami and a Doctorate of Business Administration with a concentration in marketing from Duke University. He served on Spring Hill’s board of trustees from 2003 to 2012.

From 2002 to 2014, Puto was dean and distinguished chair in the Opus College of Business at St. Thomas University in St. Paul, Minnesota. Before that, he served as professor of marketing and dean of The McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University.

Puto has also served as associate dean and director of the MBA program and professor of marketing and psychology at the University of Arizona in Tucson. He also taught at the University of Michigan and Appalachian State University.

In addition to his work in academia, Puto has consulted for a wide range of businesses, including Bank of America, Eastman Kodak Company and General Electric Company.

“Saying that I am deeply honored to serve as Spring Hill's 37th president is indeed an understatement,” Puto said. “Throughout my career I have always treasured the liberal arts education I received by the Jesuits and truly feel that it has prepared me to serve in this capacity. I look forward to working with my fellow alumni and the student and college leadership at Spring Hill to make it among the best of the 28 Jesuit colleges and universities in the country.” [Source: Spring Hill College]
