Jesuit Father Scott Santarosa
What Does Lent Mean to Me?

March 1, 2017 — Today on Ash Wednesday, Jesuit Father Scott Santarosa, provincial of the Jesuits' Oregon Province, reflects on what Lent means to him. Fr. Santarosa finds that the most meaningful Lents are when he does something that puts him in solidarity with others.

When Fr. Santarosa worked at a Los Angeles parish with many immigrants, he would fast on Wednesdays. If he was tempted to eat, he would think about those who struggled to have enough.

“When I do it only for myself and my own sanctity, not that good,” he says of his Lenten experiences. “When I do it to connect myself with another group of people, much better.”
