USA Northeast Jesuit Province Releases List of Jesuits Credibly Accused of Sexual Abuse of a Minor or Vulnerable Adult

January 16, 2019 — On Jan. 15, the USA Northeast Province Jesuits released the names of Jesuits who have had a credible allegation of abuse against a minor or vulnerable adult since 1950.

This follows the release of lists of credibly accused Jesuits by the four other U.S. Jesuit provinces: the Central and Southern Province and Jesuits West Province released lists on Dec. 7, 2018, and the Maryland Province and Midwest Province released lists on Dec. 17, 2018.

The USA Northeast Province is composed of what were separate provinces at various periods over the past 70 years: Buffalo in the 1960s; New England and New York separately until 2014. The list includes Jesuits who belonged to any of those provinces

“On behalf of all of the Jesuits of the USA Northeast Province, I apologize for any of our brothers who have committed crimes of abuse and pledge to work to provide safe environments for all to whom we minister and to offer support and possibilities for healing to victims,” Fr. John J. Cecero, SJ, provincial of the Northeast Province, wrote in a letter.

No Northeast Province Jesuits who abused a minor while a Jesuit are still in active ministry. The USA Northeast Province has a zero-tolerance policy regarding instances of inappropriate conduct between a Jesuit and a minor, and when a claim involving abuse of a current minor is made against a Jesuit, the province immediately reports it to law enforcement regardless of the current age of the victim.

The province has an FAQ with more information on the release of names, its procedures for preventing abuse and how to report accusations of abuse. [Source: USA Northeast Province]
