Fr. Amos Estinor, SJ, was born in Treille in the municipality of Gros-Morne in Haiti. The third of six children in a devout Catholic family, Amos was attracted to the priesthood from an early age. His first contact with the Jesuits was through his cousin, Fr. Emmanuel Saint Hilaire, SJ, but he really discovered Ignatian spirituality through his participation in a vocation group at his parish, Notre-Dame de la Chandeleur in Gros-Morne. Amos was especially drawn to the call of St. Ignatius to find God in all things. In 2006, after one year in pre-novitiate, he entered the Jesuit novitiate in Port-au-Prince. As a novice, Amos served in Bombardopolis, a remote area of Haiti, where he worked in evangelization. He moved to the Dominican Republic to study at Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo, graduating in 2012 with a license in humanities and philosophy. From 2012 to 2014, Amos worked with the communication team of Service Jésuite aux Migrants in Ouanaminthe and was in charge of the library. He became involved in a recycling project with young people, educating them and collecting plastic waste to transform it into sandals and necklaces. Amos also taught Spanish in a Fe y Alegría school. Throughout his formation, his desire to serve the poor and to study theology in order to become a priest grew. The highlight of Amos’ formation was discovering the presence of God at the heart of all of his experiences. In 2014, he began his studies in theology at Université Laval in Quebec City while also doing a two-year formation program in spiritual accompaniment at Centre de Spiritualité Manrèse. In 2017, he received a bachelor’s degree in theology. Amos was ordained to the diaconate at the Jesuit Chapel in Quebec City and then moved to Toronto to start an ecclesiastical license in theology. He will celebrate his first Mass of Thanksgiving in the Chapelle Ste-Cécile in Treille, Haiti. (French Canada Province)
