Fr. Ryan G. Duns, SJ

Fr. Ryan G. Duns, SJ, 35, hails from Cleveland. At the age of 8, Fr. Duns picked up an Irish tin whistle for the first time and by the time he was 14, was performing in pubs all over his hometown. As an eighth grader, he played in a band with a Jesuit and later came to know Jesuits as a student at Saint Ignatius High School in Cleveland. He remembers being struck by their goodness and happiness. At Canisius College in Buffalo, New York, Fr. Duns earned a bachelor’s degree in religious studies in 2002 and then returned to Cleveland to teach private music lessons while earning a master’s degree in religious studies at John Carroll University. At John Carroll’s Mass of the Holy Spirit in 2003, Fr. Duns felt his long vocational discernment coming to an end as he considered his heart’s deepest desire and knew that God was calling him to the Society of Jesus. His two years as a Jesuit novice were a transformative time for Fr. Duns because he learned both how to pray and how to be present in prayer. At Fordham University in the Bronx, New York, Duns earned a master’s degree in philosophy in 2009 and ran student programming for the Curran Center for American Catholic Studies. He also taught a course on the Irish tin whistle and began to post instructional tin whistle videos on YouTube. Next missioned to the University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy, Fr. Duns taught theology and Latin and ran the Student Senate for three years before being missioned to the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry. He earned a Master of Theological Studies degree there while serving as a deacon at St. Cecilia Parish in Boston. Following ordination, Fr. Duns will continue work on his doctorate in theology at Boston College. His first Mass as a Jesuit priest will take place at his home parish of St. Brendan Catholic Parish in North Olmsted, Ohio.
